Evenstar

May 13, 2022

With the weather warming up, I've been spending a lot of time outside in the evenings. I built a backyard paradise last year, and improved upon it this year, that's true… but the front porch is always my favorite. You'll find me haunting it most nights, enjoying a glass, enjoying the solitude… in all honestly, enjoying some TV show nobody else in the family likes on my phone. My little fire going, except those nights when the heat of the day just doesn't want to fade away. The dog by my side. It's truly heaven.

Then, when it's finally time to go to bed, the dog and I take one or two last laps around the neighborhood. It's so astonishingly pleasant, that time of night. The air is finally starting to cool. It's quiet, as quiet as it ever gets in our neighborhood. Peaceful.

I like to try to pick out the stars, beyond the street lights. Wish there were more to see, but suburban life has its tradeoffs. It's ok, though, because every one of them pales in comparison to the brightest star in my universe:

You.

You, my Evenstar, shining so brightly. Venus has nothing on you.

I know all of the very good reasons that it won't happen, but sometimes… as I walk past your house, I hope to find you on your front porch, also enjoying the loveliest of evenings. And you'll join me. And we'll walk… side by side, if not hand in hand, enjoying each other's company. Nothing could please me more.

I suppose I'll have to wait.

In the meantime, keep shining, my beautiful star. Keep making the world a brighter place, just by existing. Keep making my world a brighter place, just by knowing you. Your light is always welcome, will always have a place in this heart. Shine on my love, my Evenstar. Shine on.
